- The other name for guinea pigs is cavies
- Guinea pigs originate from the grasslands and lower slops of the Andes mountains in South America.
- They are active up to 20 hours a day and only sleep for short periods.
- Piggies are prey animals.
- A male guinea pig is called a boar and a female is called a sow, baby guinea pigs are pups.
- A guinea pigs ears are very sensitive to loud noises.
- Guinea pigs will fall asleep in your lap if they trust you.
- They like to spend time grooming themselves and each over.
- Although guinea pigs vision is not that good, they are not colour blind.
- A normal guinea pigs body temperature is 99-103 degrees.
Health Checks
- Check there poops, they should not be runny or smelly and should be shaped like a jelly bean. If there poops are just a bit soft then cut down on there greens for a couple of hours.
- If they squeal while having a wee there could be an infection, if you notice this take them to the vet immediately.
- Front teeth and nails should be checked regularly baring in mind you have to cut your piggies nails weekly.
- Take your guinea pigs to the vets once a year.
- Check there eyes. They should be bright and clear. If
